Part 1 : Our Speakers
In part one we have three speakers who will cover:
- What the Highland Council are doing.
- How to improve the effectiveness of the discussions that we have on the climate crisis.
- How to cope better with the emotional difficulties that we are all facing and improve on the communications that we have with others.
Part 2: Discussion
The second part of the meeting will focus on building our connections with each other. In smaller break out groups, we will share what we're doing and select from the following options:
- Further discuss one topic from the morning
- Discuss & help with a specific issue some may be having
- Or indeed just chat and build friendships
Finally the meeting will come back together to share any thoughts or questions.
The Talks:
Keith Masson - What Highland Council are doing for Climate Change?
Keith Masson is the Council’s Climate Change Officer, and has been working to help decarbonise both the Council and wider Highland region for over 7 years. Keith will be talking to us about the Council’s efforts to tackle the climate and ecological emergency and what communities can do to support and benefit from these plans.
Pamela Candea - How to have Carbon Conversations.
In 2012, Pam formed The Surefoot Effect which equips people, communities and organisations with the skills for sustainability and resilience. She has a wealth of experience and knowledge about tackling climate change and runs various programmes, including facilitating many of the earlier Scottish Government Climate Conversations.
Pam will give us a mini experience of Carbon Conversations Workshops which aim to improve community conversations and reduce our carbon footprints. Most importantly, the Carbon Conversations process helps us deal with the difficulties of change by connecting to values, emotions and identity. We will also discuss the various options of running Climate or Carbon Conversations workshops within our communities.
Bobby Jones - Improving Emotional Resilience.
Bobby, of Freewheel Coaching, brings a clear, refreshing and supportive approach to coaching, having worked with a wide range of individuals and groups over the last 20 years.
This talk will introduce various tools and techniques to help us to comprehend and rationalise the emotional difficulties that we are all facing. There will be opportunity to reflect on our own resilience levels and those of the communities we work with. We will also then consider these implications and how we support and work with each other as we respond to Covid, Climate Change and the other significant challenges that come our way.
More about the speakers:
About Keith Masson
Keith Masson is the Council’s Climate Change Officer, and has been working to help decarbonise both the Council and wider Highland region for over 7 years. Keith originally trained in law, but very quickly realised it wasn’t his true calling, so please don’t hold it against him! Keith is currently working closely with a number of partners as well as colleagues across the Council to identify how we can use the response to the COVID-19 pandemic to work better together, to develop a more place-based approach to both climate change mitigation and adaptation, whilst recognising the hugely significant role that Highland will play in helping Scotland to meet its 2045 net zero ambitions.
About Pamela Candea
Following a long career in the corporate world, Pamela started The Surefoot Effect, CIC after receiving an award for Social Innovation in 2012. Surefoot supports organisations tackling the Climate Emergency and social justice issues by running workshops and working with groups and individuals, including training facilitators for group work. The workshops include Carbon Conversations, Climate Conversations and Future Conversations (all online now). Surefoot has secured funding for 4 Erasmus+ projects with European partners focusing on tackling the climate emergency and building resilience for individuals and communities. Pam has a wealth of experience including working on various sustainability programmes such as Going Carbon Neutral Stirling and Transition Edinburgh University and she was the Sustainability Engagement Manager for Edinburgh University. Pam is also on the board of SCCAN.
About Bobby Jones
Bobby has been working in Scotland for 20 years supporting a diverse range of individuals, organisations, families and communities to achieve positive change. Initially this was through a range of roles in outdoor education, youth work, social work and research. For the last 8 years, Bobby has been working independently as a coach, designer and facilitator of learning and development programmes. Bobby is fascinated by change processes and brings a blend of research knowledge and practical experience to the work, having a particular interest in the fields of resilience, co-creation and leadership.
