About this event

Community • LGBT

Growing Culture is a unique series of workshops combining art psychotherapy group work with hands-on science lab enquiry. Using a range of art materials and bacteria as our mediums, these workshops are for LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and other related identities) people to explore concepts of personal growth, increase community connection and engage their curiosity in celebration of themselves.

The workshops will take place over 2 consecutive Saturday afternoons (1.30-6pm) with attendance at both dates required. During the workshops you will have the opportunity to meet other LGBTQIA+ people, use lab equipment like microscopes, learn more about the different properties of bacteria, grow your own bacteria and use a range of art materials to reflectively make art in response to the themes of identity, growth and survival. No prior experience or skill in art making or science is required, only a curiosity to see everyday things in a new way.

The workshops are planned and delivered by ASCUS Art & Science General and Lab Manager, Dr. Keira Tucker (she/her) and queer specialising Art Psychotherapist Alison Wren(she/they). The workshops will take place between the Science lab and Art Psychotherapy studio sites within Summerhall.

Who is it for?

The workshops are suitable for LGBTQIA+ people aged 18 and over, including those who may be questioning their sexuality and/or gender. The workshops are designed for people who are interested in engaging with their creativity to connect with others in a small group (approx 8 people) setting. Whilst there is no expectation for people to share anything they do not feel comfortable with, some discussion in pairs and with the whole group will be encouraged. Prior to booking, please read our safer space guidelines for more information on conduct, including science lab based health and safety requirements.

These workshops are not suitable for those currently in crisis. The workshops are also not suitable for anyone unable to commit to attend both dates of the workshops (Saturdays 20th & 27th September,1:30pm-6pm).

How to book

By booking a ticket you are reserving a place at the workshops. Alison will then be in touch via email to confirm some details, including an opportunity to clarify any access needs and answer any questions which might help you know more about what to expect. At this point your place will then be confirmed. If there is any reason we think the workshops might not be suitable for you at this time, we will let you know and try to suggest an alternative.

Places are offered on a first come first served basis, however we are also operating a waiting list. People who attended our previous set of workshops included those allocated from waitlist spaces.

We are able to offer these workshops for free thanks to funding from Awards for All community fund. With thanks to their support we are also able to offer assistance with local travel costs for people who might otherwise find those financially inaccessible.

If there is anything else you would like further information about prior to booking, please email Alison via arttherapywithalison@gmail.com

Is the building accessible?

There is technically level access within the two spaces that we will be using at Summerhall. However, some of the lifts require advance notice to access, and therefore is one of the reasons we ask about access requirements at booking.

Is food and drink provided?

We will provide complimentary tea, coffee, water biscuits and fruit. Please bring anything else you may need with you.

What else do I need to bring?

All art materials are provided. When in the lab you will need to make sure that you are wearing clothing that covers your legs, closed toe shoes and that any long hair is tied back. White lab coats will be provided.

Can I see the spaces before the workshops?

If you are someone who would find benefit in visiting the spaces and meeting the facilitators prior to the workshops, we can arrange this. Please make a note of it in the access requirements part of the booking form.

Is it safe to work with bacteria?

We are working with bacteria classed as biosafety level 1,meaning the bacteria are considered safe and non-disease causing for healthy individuals. As such, this workshop is not suitable for severely immunocompromised people. Please discuss with us via the access needs section of the booking form.
