Event description

Description

Dear Supporter of Grown in Totnes

I am writing to invite you to a workshop to explore the next phase of Grown in Totnes on the 16th July 2018, 12pm – 4pm, Totnes (venue TBC). We wish to bring together all interested parties, and we believe that includes YOU!

Background

Over the past few years our ground breaking project has succeeded in being the first modern mill to set up in the UK, creating a market for locally produced grains and pulses by building close partnerships with local producers and retailers. Since 2015 we have:

  • Created a grain and legume processing facility from scratch
  • Built a team of 3 part-time staff and worked with over 60 volunteers
  • Partnered with 6 local farmers to undergo a pioneering experiment to grow and store a variety of crops for the local human market
  • Sold our products to over 20 customers within a 30 mile radius, including local cafes, restaurants, shops and bakeries

We now have 12 products available to purchase; our market is growing and we are receiving national enquires from around the UK on an almost weekly basis, from people wishing to learn from our initiative.

As well as our growing list of successes, the project has faced a number of challenges that has meant our sales have been slower than we would have liked. We have been reliant on funding from Esmee Fairburn, to cover our core costs, which comes to an end this October and now we need to generate innovative ideas to enable this enterprise to evolve.

Who should Attend?

Grown in Totnes sprung out of a strong desire from the community to see locally grown and processed flours, and so it feels appropriate that 3 years after our crowd funding campaign we should seek the community’s input into this next phase.

Whether you are:

  • a farmer who has grown for us
  • a retailer who has stocked our range
  • a customer who has bought our products
  • a supporter of our crowd funding campaign
  • a volunteer who has worked with us in the processing unit
  • someone who has given advise to the project over the years
  • someone with an interest in the model we’ve created,

Your contribution to this day is essential.

What will we cover?

During this workshop we will celebrate the projects achievements, illustrate the challenges that we have faced and explore different scenarios for taking Grown in Totnes into the next phase of its evolution.

We will be putting on a spread of delicious local food with an emphasis on Grown in Totnes produce.

Benefits to attending

We want this to be an event that is mutually beneficial. We believe that you will benefit by attending in some of the following ways:

  • Providing potential business opportunities
  • Helping to shorten your business’s supply chains
  • Providing an opportunity to meet all of the players in the local food network under one roof
  • Creating understanding of the local food system and it’s challenges more fully
  • Finding out more about growing and selling grain for human consumption (the pluses and the pitfalls)
  • Empowering you to contribute to the future of this unique, cutting edge initiative
  • Giving you a delicious local lunch, to share with like minded people
  • There will be plenty of time for networking over a glass or mug of something at the end of the day, as will book the venue until 5.30pm.

Booking details

If you wish to attend please pay a fully refundable deposit of £5.00 (including the Eventbrite fee). This will be reimbursed to all attendees by Eventbrite after the event. This will enable us to ensure that there is enough food and drink, and hire a large enough venue to accommodate you all.

Final details of the event, including location will be sent closer to the time, however it will be in Totnes.

Be part of the change that you want to see in the world. Book your place by Monday July 2nd.

We look forward to welcoming you.
