Event Details

Early in 2015, significant European Union funding will become available to boost economic development in Dorset. Some of this is earmarked for tackling barriers to economic inclusion.

We know that some people in Dorset find it difficult to access support to help them grow and develop their ideas and businesses. Many more face barriers to getting jobs, such as childcare, health conditions, disabilities, or language, or cannot get the type of work they aspire to.

At this conference, we want your help to:

  • identify and consider the main challenges to accessing business advice and support
  • share and discuss the barriers to getting the type of work you aspire to
  • come up with solutions that can inform successful funding bids by local providers

Making it happen - how to get businesses off the ground

Special guest speaker Zoe Bradley will be sharing her experience and advice on growing an inclusive local economy. Zoe is the Programme Director of Outset, the award-winning Bournemouth business start-up support programme that, in the last three years alone, has helped to create more than 3,500 sustainable new businesses and over 4,000 new jobs.

There will be the opportunity to discuss the issues you have with local enterprise advice and employment support agencies. There will also be a series of workshops to explore the following (these can be selected when you register):

Overcoming barriers to employment

Workshop to explore:

  • Whether people experience barriers to getting a job and what these are
  • What support is already available for people and does it work
  • Ideas to make things better

Making business ideas successful

 Workshop to explore:

  • Whether people can get their business ideas off the ground and make them a success
  • Where people can go for business advice and support, and how helpful this is
  • What are the biggest barriers to success and how can they be overcome

Raising aspirations for local people

 Workshop to explore:

  • Whether people have the opportunities they want and can get the jobs they desire
  • How to best use the talents and skills of local people
  • How can we improve opportunities for the future

What is a social enterprise

 Workshop to explore:

  • What a social enterprise is, and the difference between this and a Community Interest Company
  • The benefits of a social enterprise model
  • How we can encourage more enterprising ideas with a community benefit

A free bus service will be running from outside the Collition Club in Dorchester, opposite County Hall. You can reserve a seat on the bus when you complete the booking form.

If you are travelling by car, the Lighthouse is located opposite the Dolphin Centre pay and display car park. The bus and railway station are also located opposite.

For those travelling by car, free parking has been arranged at the nearby Dolphin Swimming Pool car park, Kingland Road, Poole, BH15 1TN. An attendant will be in the car park on the day to hand out permits.

There is no charge for attendance at this conference, and food and drink is included.
