Growth Mindset – a powerful theory to support our coaching

Have you noticed how frequently people talk about having the “right mindset” to approach a task or a challenge? This word has increasingly come into everyday usage. But do we all understand what mindset theory is?

Based on over 40 years of research by Professor Carol Dweck, the theory of fixed and growth mindsets is becoming an increasingly important theory to understand how people are motivated, and why they may give up.

This session will provide coaches with a comprehensive approach to mindset theory, in a practical way, that they can take to their coaching. Included in the session is:

  • An understanding of mindset theory and how it fits in with other motivation theories

  • Helping coaches tap into the limitless possibility of our clients’ potential

  • Using this approach to inform our coaching, especially:

  • Reviewing our beliefs about ourselves as coaches

  • Our beliefs about our clients’ capacity for change

  • Our clients’ beliefs about their own capacity for change

The session will be participative, with opportunities to reflect on our own coaching practice and to apply mindset approaches to it.

Mindset approaches are very well embedded in the education system in the UK and USA, but haven’t taken off strongly in mainstream coaching. This session will be a launchpad to help Guildford Coaches become trailblazers of mindset influenced coaching!

About your trainer – Charlie Warshawski

Charlie is an education leadership coach and trainer, who has specialised in the education sector since 2001. As a coach he is qualified to ICF’s PCC level, and he spends much of his time running Love Your Coaching, helping coaches obtain ILM coaching qualifications.

In the education sector he has been delivering training in schools since 2007 on coaching, performance development and other topics allied to coaching. Since 2014 he has been part of a team including Carol Dweck, offering year-long programmes to help schools transform into Mindset communities. He says of the mindset approach “I have seen plenty of education theories come and go, but very little with the power and the reach of mindset. It has the possibility of impacting everything in school, from the way the student believes in themselves to the way classes and learning is organised. The impact in schools who engage in this is nothing short of extraordinary”
