Description

#GSuiteEduTalk Sydney

Using digital tools to support literacy and empower successful learners

Date: 6th June 2017

Venue: Novotel Sydney Olympic Park

Join us for our special event for educators across Australia who are interested in/currently using G Suite for Education (formerly Google Apps for Education).

In just one day, learn how to support ALL students in your classroom, enhancing student engagement and empowering their independent learning, every day in every subject.

Learn how technology can save you time in delivering effective differentiated instruction for ALL students. Inclusive of those who are struggling, those who are mastering English as their second language and those who have “just checked out” and are disengaged.

Learn from presenters with many years of experience in successfully using technology in the classroom.

Speakers:

Kimberley Hall, Regional Director, EdTechTeam Australia & New Zealand

Kimberley has extensive teaching and leadership experience in different sectors across Australia, including her role as the Learning and Teaching Advisor for Catholic Education Melbourne. She is a Google for Education Certified Innovator and Certified Trainer and has a natural gift for re-energising educators in her sessions!

Jason Carroll, Global Product Manager, Texthelp

Jason’s skill lies in assisting teachers to bridge the gap between operation of technology and successful implementation. He has trained thousands of teachers worldwide in embedding Universal Design for Learning principles into the classroom, ensuring support for all learners as and when they need it.

Greg O'Connor, Technology Innovation and Implementation, Texthelp

Greg is a teacher with 30 years experience in schools and leadership roles across NSW. He knows how the NSW education system ticks, across State, Catholic and Independent School sectors; and therefore knows how to effectively integrate technology to empower students to independently drive their learning.

Agenda:

9.00am - 9.30am
Light Breakfast on arrival

9.30am to 10.20am
Opening Keynote: “What really matters”
Kimberley Hall

Our schools are becoming increasingly more complex places, often leaving us wondering what it means to be truly literate in all things 2017. Together, let’s focus on some of the things that really matter in education, the things that can change the learners in our classrooms for a lifetime.

10.20am to 11.20am
Supporting literacy and promoting student agency for ALL learners using digital tools
Greg O'Connor

Creating learning environments that accommodate, foster and challenge ALL learners, regardless of the barriers that currently exist for them around the literacy demands of school, is an essential requirement for schools meeting the needs of ALL their students. Students can come to school defined only by their ability to read and write in english, and not by their current understandings and future aspirations. This session will provide participants with core understandings and practical strategies using digital tools to support active learners and enable them to differentiate learning opportunities and provide access to the curriculum for all.

11.20am to 12.00pm
Big Data, Analytics, and Student Privacy
Jason Carroll

Over the last few years a major shift has occurred in the way software is deployed and accessed in schools. Instead of downloading and installing software on machines, schools are subscribing to software that's in the cloud, and can be accessed anytime, anywhere, and on any device.

There are of course many benefits to this for both schools and software developers. One of the biggest being analytics that allow districts to see how often software is being used, and in some cases if it’s making a difference. Unfortunately the more analytics collected, the more student privacy becomes a big concern.

This session will look at what analytics can tell us now, the future of what analytics can offer, and tips for ensuring student privacy is maintained.

12.00pm - 1.00pm LUNCH

1.00pm - 1.30pm

As a participant in this workshop, you will be given free-of-charge access to a suite of extensions and apps for use within the Google Chrome Browser. Join Texthelp’s Global Partner Manager as he steps you through the features and benefits to your students of each of these tools.

1.30pm to 2.30pm

Round table sessions allowing you to move through a series of 15 minute presentations by presenters who have used the technologies discussed by Jason in the previous session. Learn about the features that are the presenters’ favourites for supporting their students.

  • Supporting maths done digitally (Jason Carroll)
  • Supporting independent study success (Anita Raftery)
  • Supporting writing (Greg O’Connor)
  • Supporting Reading Fluency (Kimberley Hall)

2.30pm to 3.00pm
Know Your Role - Setting Yourself (and Your Classroom) up for Success
Jason Carroll

Shakespeare once said… “All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players.”

Unfortunately many of us fail to write our own scripts and determine the role we want to play. Instead we take the script that’s handed to us and play our part, many times dissatisfied with the results we obtain. The good news is that classrooms today offer more potential than ever before. They include more technology, instructional supports, and resources that help level the playing field and engage all learners. But it’s up to educators to create environments that set students (and themselves) up for success.

Jason will share practical tips and best practice for creating environments that encourage implementing the many new technologies and strategies acquired throughout the day. Participants will leave inspired and encouraged knowing they have what it takes to move the ideas presented from the workshop to the classroom.
