The GTC Academy Day welcomes CCI students (especially Film, TV and Media) to a series of talks from camera professionals.

About this Event

The GTC Television Academy is an opportunity to hear from leading camera operators and directors of photography. Throughout the day the speakers will give inspiring presentations about some of the work they’ve completed, navigating your way through the industry, working as a freelance and filming independent productions.

The Guild of Television Camera Professionals is an independent craft organisation supporting and encouraging excellence in all aspects of television camerawork. GTC members are professional cameramen and camerawomen who operate in all areas of broadcasting. The International Association of Wildlife Filmmakers (IAWF) is affiliated with the GTC.

Academy Speakers

Alan Duxbury - Director of Photography

Who knew they wanted to be a cameraman? Alan will share stories from his time behind the camera on shows like Top Gear and Comic Relief, from dramas and documentaries, cooking shows and current affairs and how working in one genre helps your expertise in another.

Barry Bassett - VMI Managing Director

With over 25 years broadcasting experience and an MBA from Imperial College, Barry runs VMI and manages key clients and projects. He will speak about the relationship between freelancer and hire company and offer advice when starting in the industry.

Graham Horder - Wildlife Filmmaker

Filming blue-chip natural history and presenter/contributor led documentaries, Graham has worked as a wildlife specialist and an experienced ‘people’ cameraman. He will describe some of his work, techniques, explain how he was chosen for different projects and even show his own ‘student film’!

Jack Willis - Camera Operator/Assistant

Jack graduated in 2013 and now works across various sectors including live productions. He will offer a current perspective of breaking into the industry, setting up as self employed, finding potential employers and marketing yourself to them, and sharing ideas and advice from his interesting career to date.

Sarah Smither - Director of Photography

From specialist factual, documentary work, music videos, commercials and her first independent feature film, Sarah talks about her route through the camera department as well as the challenges and advantages of being a woman in a man’s world.

The GTC Television Academy is sponsored by the University of Portsmouth with the GTC affiliated with International Association of Wildlife Filmmakers (IAWF).

Please book your tickets for every speaker's talk you want to attend so that we can keep track of the numbers. Access to this event runs on an hourly basis, so if you intend to see a speaker, do not enter the Lecture Theatre later than the time specified on your ticket.
