About this event

Ukraine has continued to show incredible resistance throughout the conflict, but struggled to make a major breakthrough last year in its counteroffensive against Russia. Meanwhile, Moscow has ramped up pressure along the frontlines, and intensified missile attacks on major cities. There seems no prospect of a workable peace plan, and some experts talk of a stalemate.

World leaders and ministers continue to visit Kyiv, and the EU has begun accession negotiations with Ukraine. But is their financial backing still guaranteed? Funding packages worth tens of billions of pounds have been held up in the US Congress by Republicans and in the EU. Can Ukraine continue to rely on the West? What would a Trump presidency mean for the war? As the all-out conflict enters its third year, how is morale within the country?

Tom Burgis, the Guardian’s investigations correspondent was joined by Luke Harding, Guardian foreign correspondent and author of Invasion; Charlotte Higgins, Guardian chief culture writer; Ukrainian novelist Andrey Kurkov and Orysia Lutsevych, head of the Ukraine Forum at Chatham House.
