In May this year I started runnning with Jon O'Connell from York after my eye sight changed and resulted in me needing a buddy runner. Since May 2016 Jon and I have completed a Hardmoors 10km at Osmotherly and we were the first vi and guide pairing to complete a Hardmoors Marathon at Hardmoors Rosedale Marathon in June along with the Wheatley 10 Miler in July.
On our travels many people have asked how did Jon become a guide runner, how do we work as a team, what do I see as a visually impaired runner, as a result we have spoken to the RNIB and guide running UK who are happy to support us in offering a training and infomation day.
Jacqui Macquire from RNIB is coming along to explain the different types of visual impairments and also to talk about her own experience of being a guide for her visually impaired colleague during a Walk in Iceland.
Jon O'Connell will be there to talk about his experience as a new guide, Jon hasn't done any formal training we have learnt as we have run together, guiding is very much based on trust and confidence, and a hint of stupidty.
The day will give you an introduciton to the different levels of visual impairments, with an opportunity to use simulation glasses to see what we see, as well as have a practical session guiding out on different terrain.
SImon Wheatcroft the founder of Guide Running UK is happy to accept any participant from the information day as a guide on Guide Running UK. A facebook and web based group pairing guides with runners who need a buddy.
The session is £10 however there is a small admin charge from Event Brite which increases the costs to you to £11:21. Your day fee covers the hire of the village hall and we will provide you with light refreshments. Any 'profit' from this day will be give to the RNIB for supporting our session.
