By Centrala Events

Overview

The tour offers insight into Gullick’s working methods, career history, and the stories behind some of his most recognisable images.

Join renowned music photographer Steve Gullick for a guided tour of his exhibition “PHOTOGRAPHS”. The tour offers insight into Gullick’s working methods, career history, and the stories behind some of his most recognisable images.

The exhibition presents a selection of Gullick’s iconic portraits of influential figures from alternative music across the 1990s and beyond. Beginning his career in 1990 with a commission for Sounds magazine, Gullick went on to become a leading photographer within British music journalism, contributing regularly to Melody Maker and NME, and producing album artwork and publicity photography for record labels. His work is known for its raw immediacy, emotional depth, and close collaborative approach.

Gullick has photographed and worked closely with artists including Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, Mark Lanegan, Cat Power, and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. His images have become closely associated with a period of music marked by experimentation, intensity, and individuality.

Reflecting on his early years, he notes:

“Between 1985 and 1987, I used to travel through Birmingham every day on the journey from my home in Coventry to college in Wednesbury. I learned a lot there, had access to great equipment, and used it to hone my craft, alas, I failed the course on maths! I’m thrilled to be showing my work at Centrala.”

“PHOTOGRAPHS” traces the evolution of Gullick’s career and highlights his distinctive approach to portraiture, rooted in trust, collaboration, and the creative exchange between photographer and subject.
