Event description

Description

Now that the frivolity of The Godiva Festival is over (God rest her soul) join us at the Priory Visitors Centre (behind Nando's on Trinity Street) as we start off our Medieval City Wall Tour at the site of the monastery founded by Lady Godiva and Leofric Earl of Mercia herself.

After being closed for 14 months Coventry Priory Visitors Centre has been reopened by a bunch of volunteers who as a social enterprise are determined to keep this part of Coventry's history open.

If you've never been down into the Undercrofts next to the water fountain in Priory Place now you can. Join us on Saturday as we kick off our tour in the gardens, the museum and the Undercrofts before making our way to Swanswell Gate next to lady Herberts Gardens and startign our Tour around the Medieval City Wall of Coventry

Built between 1355 and 1534 the Medieval City wall was originally built with 12 walls and 20 towers to protect the signifcant trading city of Coventy. With half of the city belonging to the Prior and the other half the Earls side the city was a mecca for pilgrims and traders alike.

Our tour will take you to the sites of all 12 gates, to the 2 remaining towers and the gate that's not a gate, the wall that's not a wall and the window that's not a window all conducted by our very own Friar.

The Deep Fat Friar.

Thr tour includes a copy of Coventry's Medieval Story which seperately retails for £5 so at £10 including the book the tour is a bargain.

In all it's about 2 mile and 200 meters so we recommend wearing trainers or comfortable shoes and bringing a camera as there are lots of photo opportunities.

Feel free to turn up earlier and browse the artefacts discovered by Channel 4's Time Team & Coventry Archaeology when they came to Coventry in 1999 and again when they returned in 2001

The tour is suitable for children and grandchildren and we positively recommend it
