Event description

Description

Join Jessica Rutterford for a tour of the exhibition Richard Smith. Richard Smith (1931 – 2016) rose to the forefront of the emerging avant-garde scene in London in the 1960s, standing apart from the burgeoning Pop Art movement by melding the slick and vibrant imagery found in the commercial landscape with an abstract painterly style very much his own. This exhibition brings together works from the past five decades, including a mobile installation never before exhibited in the United Kingdom and other rarely seen works from the artist’s estate.

An exhibition of work from the last five decades by Richard Smith, including an installation work not seen previously in the UK and other rarely exhibited pieces from the artist's estate.

Smith was awarded the CBE in 1971. He joined Flowers Gallery, London and New York in 2000 and his work is held in the public collections of the Arts Council of Great Britain; The British Museum, London; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; TATE Gallery, London; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Whitney, New York; MIT, Boston; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC.
