Guided tour of the fort

Actions and Detail Panel

Event description
Volunteer-led guided tour of the Roman fort at Maryport. The fort is situated on the western end of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site.

About this event

Visitors to the museum can enjoy a tour of the adjacent Roman fort led by a volunteer guide. Museum admission is required.

The collection of Roman and Romano-British objects in the museum was recovered from the fort and its adjacent civil settlement by the Senhouse family since the time of Elizabeth I.

The tours takes you around the earthworks of this six acre site and offers a spectacular view of the Solway Firth and the Scottish Coast.

The tours take about 45 - 60 minutes and follow a route around the fort earthworks. The fort is situated on farmland and suitable footwear and clothing should be worn. Dogs are not allowed on the tours (except registered guide and assistance dogs) due to farmstock.

We are grateful to the landowner (CulturaTrust) and their tenants for allowing the tours to happen.
