Event description

Description

The Grange is a Scheduled Monument with Grade 1 listing. The original red brick house was built in the mid-1660s to a design by William Samwell. In c.1809 William Wilkins re-cased the building in the form of a Doric Temple. Extensions to The Grange were designed by Robert Smirke in 1817, C.R. Cockerell in 1852, but most of these have been demolished. C.R Cockerell’s Conservatory survives but has had many conversions including a ballroom, picture gallery and most recently an opera house.

On Friday 20th English Heritage Properties Curators, will give tours of the house, discussing its historical development and the people who lived here. If you cannot stay for the tour, or miss out on booking please note the house and theatre will be open for viewing from 14.00. The Grange Festival volunteers and The Grange Estate will be stationed around the house, the stage, and the theatre with interesting notes about the history of the house. There will also be a short-history booklet of the building to take away.

The site is not wheelchair friendly or easy for people with restricted mobility and has many drops. Assistance dogs welcome. Pushchair/prams need note difficult uneven grounds.
