Join us for our guided walk; From Romans to Roadstone
Our walk from the old Cawfields Quarry site follows the craggy line of Hadrian's Wall eastwards with its sloping milecastle and some of the best stretches of the Vallum. At Caw Gap we head south into the Haltwhistle Burn whose sparkling waters, through a steep gorge, belie its rich industrial heritage when woollen mills, coal mines and brickworks filled the valley.
The path we follow upstream was once the trackway of a narrow gauge railway that carried the whinstone from the quarry to the main line and allows us to look at the interesting geology of the area on the way.
