This is a circular walk, beginning and ending at The ParkLife Café, St. James' Park, Shirley, Southampton, SO15 5SD

Join local social historian, Emma Muscat, on this fascinating tour of Shirley, Southampton, visiting locations connected with some of the 150 men and women from the ward who were members of RMS Titanic's crew.

More than 700 of RMS Titanic's crew came from Southampton. Since January, 2018, Southampton City Council have erected black plaques across the city, on properties which were home to crew members. The plaques are a memorial to both survivors as well as those who perished.

On this walk, around the Shirley area of the city, you will hear intriguing backstories of the families who lived here. In Shirley, 112 local crew lost their lives. In one local street, Malmesbury Road, which hasn't changed much over the last 100 or so years, 8 men alone lost their life! Shirley was once known as 'Stewards' Town' due to the high proportion of local men and women who worked as Stewards on the liners.

This walk will provide a fascinating glimpse into what life was like in 1912 in this Southampton suburb. You will also discover what happened next to some of local crew families following the tragedy.
