THE CITY IN SPIRES - A TOUR OF WREN’S CHURCHES
Christopher Wren (1632-1723) architect, mathematician and astronomer was tasked after the Great Fire of London 1666 with rebuilding St Paul’s Cathedral and 51 City Parish Churches.
On this walk we look at how Wren came to transform the City skyline with Spires, Towers and a magnificent Dome. What inspired his choice of architecture when building the world’s first Protestant Cathedral and Parish Churches ? We will enter and enjoy the interiors of some of Wren’s Churches which form a vibrant, historic part of City life as well as admiring his masterpiece St Paul’s Cathedral.
We will visit St Mary le Bow where tradition holds that to be a true Londoner (a Cockney), you must be born within hearing distance of the Bow Bells. You will see an unusual Baroque church with a magnificent fan vaulted ceiling and a church that has connections with Dick Whittington.
Each church had its own unique charm. Judge for yourself which is the finest !
