Description

Step back in time and trace the developments of the docks at Millbay with tour guide, Nigel Overton.

Begin your journey at the medieval tide mills before learning how quarrying, soap making and Thomas Gill made their impact in this area of Plymouth. Discover how the Docks were shaped by the civil engineering works of Rendel, Brunel and Inglis.

Stops along the way will reveal more about the personalities, events and initiatives that have shaped the docks, including; Smeaton, the Royal Marine Barracks, the ‘coming of steam’, ocean liner ‘port of call’, the Titanic and Lancastria disasters, ship-repair and Brittany Ferries.

Meet on Grand Parade, above the Waterfront (at the bottom of Radford Road)

£3 per person. Booking is essential.

This is a ‘Museum On Tour’ event for The Box, Plymouth. This event is part of our ICE 200 programme marking 200 years since the founding of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
