Guided Walk: The History of the Ribble Navigation with David Hunt
Date and time
The History of the Ribble Navigation with local historian David Hunt
About this event
Well-known local historian and author, Dr David Hunt, will lead a guided walk starting at the Preston Dock Car Park, (by the mobile café opposite Morrisons) at 7.00 pm and finish at 9pm
Preston’s distance from the sea and the prospect of increased trade and influence had long proved tantalising to the town and its leading citizens.
A river that split into various shallow branches at Penwortham and ran through wide marshland to the sea was an obvious obstacle to the dream of sea bound trade.
Political will had to contend with geological challenges if the river was to be navigable and a dock excavated.
David will share the story of how the dream developed and how it ended.
We do not charge for the walk but donations are welcome, at the end of the walk, to support the work of Preston Historical Society. Please note participants join the walk at their own risk .
