Event description

Description

Meet at Buckham’s Bridge car park by 10.30am to car share up to Chew Green. This walk follows the Pennine Way through Chew Green fort and across Coquet Head then swings over Whiteside Hill and drops down to Nether Hindhope. We then take the (deserted) road north to meet Dere Street and, with Woden Law looming above us, climb the Dere Street path to take a closer look at the fort on Woden Law. The second half of the walk follows Dere Street (a roman road and probably a prehistoric highway) back to Chew Green. The views on this stretch are little known and can often be glorious.

Discover the best routes in the Northumberland National Park on our Volunteer Guided Walks. Get outside and enjoy a day’s walking and leave the planning and navigation to us; it’s what we’re best at.

Nobody knows the best places to walk in the National Park like our volunteers so you’ll never be short of local history, stories, features and viewpoints.

Lace up your boots and enjoy a great day outside.

Numbers are limited so it is essential to book; please do not just turn up on the day.

Please dress for changeable weather, wear walking boots or shoes and bring drinks and snacks. Sorry, dogs are not allowed on this walk.

Duration : 6.5 hours

Distance : 10.5 miles

Category : Strenuous. Long and energetic walks up to 18km (11 miles). Some ascents and descents may be quite steep and on loose material. A good level of fitness is needed.

Directions: From Rothbury take the B6381 west through Thropton. At 'Flotterton' take the right signed 'Alwinton'. Go through Alwinton and continue along the single track road for approx 9 miles. The car park is on the right about 0.5 miles past Blindburn Farm.

OS Grid Ref: NT 824 107

For those wishing to use GPS/Sat-Nav to find walk start points please note that, particularly in open country, postcodes cover a large area, so, whilst the postcode will get you to the right general area, you will still need to follow the detailed directions to locate the actual Walk Start Point.
