Event description
A Guided Walking Tour of Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim, looking at important events here during the Second World War.

About this event

The Tour

Lead The Way Guided Walking Tour explores Carrickfergus as you have never seen it before.

Did you know that the town has a strong Second World War heritage?

Well, this tour brings history to life and showcases the crucial role this County Antrim town played during World War II.

Civilians became accustomed to Rationing, the Blackout, Identity Cards, Travel Permits, and Air Raid precautions (including the need for Gas Masks).

Local Factories converted to manufacture goods needed for the War Effort, such as parachutes, tanks, uniforms, and para-dummies.

The town was a staging post for military personnel from Britain, Belgium, and some of the 300,000 American troops who passed through Northern Ireland, including those who came to the town to create the US Rangers.

The Route

Starting at the historic Carrickfergus Castle, the guided tour takes you on a 1.2-mile route around the town as you learn about the daily lives of the townsfolk during wartime.

The Content

To help tell the story, you will see photographs and artifacts from that period, as well as recently commissioned reproduction Mae West Lifejacket and Para-dummy.

Tours can be arranged for other days and times, on request.
