Event description
This is an event for developers who build games in Unity, where we can meet, share knowledge and make new friends!

About this Event

Speakers:

Liam de Valmency: Gotta Go Fast: Jamming With Unity

Liam has spent the last 5 years as a programmer at Media Molecule, and also organises and participates in game jams in Guildford. This talk will delve into what exactly game jams are, and how to make the most of them with Unity. It will cover how Unity allows you to prototype and iterate on your game idea rapidly, how jamming requires a different approach and mindset than day-to-day game development, and some tips and tricks for optimising the use of your most important resource: time!

Chris Cummings: How a GPU actually works

Chris has been making games since early 2000s, and worked on games such as Burnout, Little Big Planet and No Mans Sky amongst others before starting to develop VR software in partnership with San Shepherd at Future Tech Labs. In the past few years he has specialised in optimisation and panellisation on CPU and GPU, and worked extensively with compute shaders in Unity. The wonderful thing about tools such as Unity is that they make it easier and more accessible for creative people to develop amazing games without an extensive understanding of complex hardware. However, delving into what that hardware does a little can help squeeze the extra bit of awesome out of these modern tools. In this talk, Chris covers a brief history of how GPUs have evolved, exactly what is going on when you ask a triangle to be drawn or dispatch a compute job, and some dos/don'ts/whys about how to make the most of the hardware.

This free meetup will be very informal and relaxed, with networking and beer-drinking opportunities afterwards. Please come down, bring your colleagues, and join us! Space at the venue is limited, so please register to secure a seat. Unfortunately if you haven’t pre-registered then you won’t be admitted on the night, so make sure you sign up.

This event is open to studio devs, independent developers, start-ups, freelancers, students, and any others with a technical background. The meetup is Unity-focused though, so it’s a requirement to have a basic familiarity with the Unity editor and scripting.
