About this event
The Guyana Family Sports & Fun Day is an annual event to celebrate the anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Guyana. 2022 marks the 56th anniversary of this Commonwealth country. The inspiration behind this event is to bring together the diverse communities from across the UK Guyanese diaspora and to celebrate our rich cultural heritage as one people.
Although this event has been taking place in some form since 1999, the first major Family Sports and Fun Day took place in 2003. As a family event, Guyana Family Sports & Fun Day draws attendees from all ranges of the age spectrum, with three generations of families being a common occurrence. The ethnic and religious make-up is also diverse and includes representation from the three main religions of Guyana; Christianity, Hindu and Islam. The event encourages family unity and emphasises the importance of sports and games within the family and the wider community.
The day includes popular sporting activities such as lime & spoon, sack races, piggyback races, and sprints. The activities also include a mini football tournament, dominoes tournament, traditional Guyanese games, face painting, bouncy castle and food, drink and craft stalls.
"So come one, come all - join in the sporting activities, family festivities and taste those Guyanese delicacies"
