Event description

Description

A one-day editing training workshop at the University of Bristol for postgraduate research students from the arts, humanities and relevant social science disciplines. Any students who write continuous closed-form or open-form prose essays would benefit.

Attendees will learn valuable skills in how to peer review; proofreading and providing feedback in a friendly, nurturing environment. In addition, participants will benefit from two distinct sets of detailed constructive criticism to make improvements to their own work, and learn good editing practice, tips and frameworks to take away and implement in their own work beyond the workshop. The day will form a structured time and space in which to engage in serious and detailed editing without distractions.

The day will be divided into two halves: peer-editing and feedback in the morning and self-editing in the afternoon. Due to this, we will require participants to come prepared with 4,000 words of self-written work to edit. The workshop will offer practical training on how to efficiently and constructively edit work in order to develop the participants’ editing and peer-reviewing skills for the future.

We hope to create lasting editing and peer-review networks from the workshop. The event will bring people together to network in a professional capacity; peer reviewing and learning about other projects among the new generation of GW4 doctoral researchers within these fields. Students will be encouraged to maintain the editing and peer-review groups and to regularly swap work with students across the GW4 institutions. We will create mailing lists to send out in the wake of the events, and provide advice on how to keep the connection alive after the workshop has ended.

When booking please choose your institution (in the case of DTP students please select your leading institution). If all the tickets for your institution have run out, please email lb15744@bristol.ac.uk to be put on the waiting list.

Travel grants are available for all students travelling to Bristol from Exeter, Cardiff, Bath and Penryn. Lunch will be provided.

This event is funded by GW4.
