Description

Diversity and inclusion for Gypsies, Roma & Travellers

GATE Herts exists to promote knowledge and understanding of our culture and heritage to the wider community in Hertfordshire and nationally and to examine everyday racism and its impact on Gypsy, Roma & Traveller (GRT) communities.

Aim of the day:

To increase appreciation about the cultural diversity and dimensions of GRT identities and to generate trust and understanding between communities and public sector agencies/local authority service providers.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To create a better understanding of who the GRT communities are

  2. To provide an insight about their diversity

  3. To shed light into the main needs, issues and reasons for Romani migrations

  4. To discuss their ‘role’ and place in the societies they where they live

  5. To provide a glimpse of their cultural practices

  6. To encourage thinking about the future of the GRT communities

Outcomes:

By the end of the day participants will:

  1. have increased their knowledge of often used terms such as Gypsies, Roma and Travellers and about their meanings

  2. be able to identify and understand better the cultural heritage and practices of GRT communities

  3. be able to challenge some of the stagnant and predominant beliefs surrounding GRT communities

  4. have increased their knowledge about the diversity of GRT communities, their identities and cultural practices

  5. have benefited from the knowledge and experiences of GRT community members and been exposed to their stories and perspectives

  6. become more informed and aware about their past and contemporary histories, places, challenges and circumstances

Why you should attend:
