Description

A week of using big data, interactive visualizations, and virtual reality to close the pay gap

September 25-29, 2017

Would you like to hack the pay gap and make an impact on diversity and inclusion in the world? Then you should join our Hack the Pay Gap project this September.

The gender pay gap has been in the news a lot lately and this is our opportunity to use technology to provide practical solutions to narrow it. The World Economic Forum estimates it will take at least 117 years to narrow the gender pay gap. We believe that by using technology and science we can skip a century of inequality. With #hackthepaygap we want to be tackling it with some of the most powerful tools available to us now — big data, interactive visualizations, and virtual reality.

The purpose of the project is to bring together developers, designers, and data scientists to use their skills to help women and ethnic minorities get paid what they deserve.

We would like to encourage tech teams to join us in developing solutions that can narrow the gap. Here are some suggestions, but we would like to encourage you to come up with different ideas:

  • Develop algorithms to analyse data on Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings from the Office for National Statistics to identify trends from the past decade on pay gap related to age, industry, company size and other characteristics;
  • Develop apps that encourage transparency around pay;
  • Develop nudging apps that encourage salary negotiation based on data;
  • Develop new tech solutions to fair recruitment

You can sign up as an organisation that wants to put together a team, or an individual looking for a team. Here is what you can expect:

August –sign up as a team or individual to take part in the week, we will offer individuals access to different teams depending on skills and interests.

Early September – teams choose a name and area of work, propose project

September 25-29 – teams work on their projects.

Participating teams will be invited to present their innovations on September 29, 2017 at the Engine Shed, 4pm-6pm.
