The Route...

This is a circular route of around 12.5 miles and begins and ends at Cawfields Quarry. It should take around six hours to complete. We will follow Hadrian’s Wall as far as Housesteads Fort, at which point we divert away from the Wall and return via Vindolanda Fort.

What do I need to bring?

We will issue a full kit list once you are registered, but you will need to wear suitable comfortable outdoor gear (no jeans or cotton t shirts), including walking boots and a waterproof jacket. You will also need to bring your own packed lunch.

How do I get there & is there parking?

We will meet at Cawfields Quarry Car Park, NE49 9PJ. There is a pay and display car park here, which is £5.00 for the day.

Is there an age limit?

Anyone over the age of 14 is welcome to join us for the whole walk, for anyone younger it is a very long day so we recommend joining us just for a section of the walk. Anyone under the age of 16 will need written permission from a parent/guardian.

Question 5

How fit do I have to be?

Accepted Answer

It is a long walk with lots of ups and downs, so you need to be relatively fit. We recommend you do go out for a few walks as training, but you don't need to be super fit - which is one of the attractions of this challenge.

Question 6

How much food and drink will I need?

Accepted Answer

There is nowhere on the route to top up, so we suggest at least two litres of liquid and a packed lunch.

Question 7

Can I bring my dog?

We prefer no dogs on this walk, due to the large number of fields full of livestock on the route. Any dogs MUST be kept on a lead for the full walk, as this is part of the access agreement for Hadrian’s Wall Path.
