HAIR POWER: Me & My Afro | THE MERIT CLUB
Event Information
About this Event
In this discussion we delve into the complex and courageous world of afro-hair. Leading the discussion is our fellow member Jade Holman-Travis, having been recently featured in Channel 4's HAIR POWER: me & my Afro, a taboo-busting look at how Afro-textured hair shapes Black experience and is often hidden, plagiarised or stigmatised.
Following the Channel 4 release, Jade wants to open the conversation to all, whether you have experienced discrimination for your hair (with friends/in the workplace) or have no concept for such struggles and wish to learn and educate yourselves on other's stories.
Join in on the discussion as we try to lead and guide each other on this journey we are all on to self-love.
OUR SPEAKER, JADE HOLMAN-TRAVIS
Jade had an interesting 2019 of trying to start a business, having legal issues which lead to her leaving her job of nearly 6 years and having to give up her apartment.
Then 2020 happened and whilst deep in lockdown, Jade found herself deep in the middle of the BLM movement spreading throughout the globe. With all the information and insights being shared, she had a profound realisation about her hair and with that, herself.
This realisation along with some other strings of events, it lead to her being cast on the Channel 4/Pulse Films Documentary HAIR POWER: Me & my Afro sponsored by Dove. In this Jade shares her deeply emotional discoveries with the nation, along with other men and women's 'hairmonial' stories. A beautifully shot and thought provoking piece of cinematography.
WHAT TO EXPECT?
