Event description
Visit the Science Oxford Centre for spooky science this half term with indoor-outdoor discovery in our Exploration Zone and woodland.

About this event

Visit the Science Oxford Centre this half term for a spell of spooky science for all the family. Everyone loves owls, and we all know how great they are at carrying magical letters. Did you know they can fly silently, hear the tiniest leaf rustling in the undergrowth - and eat their prey whole? Join us for a somewhat grisly drop-in activity to investigate what the owls of Oxfordshire have been eating this Halloween weekend.

Plus - conjure up chromatography-bats and explore the science of colour, and brave the pumpkin trail in our forbidden forest to figure out the magic word and win a prize. Get hands-on and try out secret experiments in the Exploration Zone, where trainee wizards can make flying frights hover above the Air Table – and see a hidden world come to light with our Curious Camera. Families can get close-up with mini-beasts and creepy crawlies with our Microscopes, or take an aquatic adventure with our outdoor Water Lab - we recommend you bring a change of wizarding outfits!

Your ticket includes two hours in the Exploration Zone and access to woodland all day. Please note, the owl-themed activity is only available during your 2-hour Exploration Zone session.

Families are welcome to bring a picnic.

Sessions

10AM - 12PM

12:30PM - 2:30PM

3:00PM - 5:00PM

Suitable for ages 3+ (all ages welcome)

Prices

£6 per person or £20 for a family ticket (4 people, must include 1 adult) under 3s free.

Café

Families can enjoy lunch at our outdoor picnic tables or indoor café area. Skogen Café at the Centre will be open from 11am until 4pm serving hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, cakes as well as their famous freshly baked Skogen buns!

New! Water Lab exhibit

The outdoor ‘Water Lab’ exhibit allows visitors to carry out a range of water-based play, investigation and problem solving activities. Experiment with floating and sinking, adjust the water flow from a trickling stream to a raging current or test your own ideas with other interchangeable accessories.

We advise bringing a change of dry clothes in case you get wet. Children must be supervised by their adult at all times.

Visit Safely

The health and well-being of our visitors and staff is our highest priority. Following Government guidance from July 19th 2021 onwards, here are some steps we are taking to keep you safe:

  • All tickets must still be booked in advance.
  • We will be keeping our reduced capacity per session.
  • Inside the Science Oxford Centre will be kept well ventilated with doors and windows open.
  • Regular cleaning will take place throughout the day.
  • Face coverings are not required but are recommended for visitors inside the centre (age 11+).
  • Hand sanitizer is available upon entering and exiting the Science Oxford Centre and in the Exploration Zone.
  • There is car parking and bike racks available for all visitors on weekends to reduce the need to take public transport.
  • Full contact details of those booking a ticket are required to comply with test and trace. QR codes for the Test & Trace app are available upon entry to the centre.
  • If you are showing symptoms of Covid-19 or are in a vulnerable group, please stay at home – you can transfer your ticket to another day.

For more details about the Science Oxford Centre and what we are doing to keep you safe, please call us on 01865 810 000, solive@scienceoxford.com or see Science Oxford Centre visitor information here.

On our open days, we may take general photos of families in the Exploration Zone and in the woodland for our social media and the Science Oxford website to publicise our programmes. If you don’t want to be photographed, please let one of our Science Oxford staff know on signing in.
