Hampshire AI returns this September with new ideas and insights!

On Wednesday 17th September, we will be joined by Thomas Irvine from University of Southampton & Web Science Institute, and Vinh-Dieu Lam from Odyssey.

As AI transforms industries at every level, one of the most exciting (and complex) shifts is happening in the creative sector. From engineers with an artistic eye to creatives who code, the lines between disciplines are blurring.

In these talks, you will:

  • See how AI is transforming creative industries and merging artistry with engineering.
  • Discover the hybrid skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven workplace.
  • Learn how generative AI can enhance and co-create rather than simply automate.
  • Understand how to integrate AI in ways that support, not diminish, human creativity.
  • Explore how education must evolve to prepare graduates for AI-powered careers.

Plus, network with peers and explore collaboration opportunities across industries.

Do we need an AI Driving License for University Graduates? - Thomas Irvine

What should all university graduates know about AI? What do their future employers want them to know? Do we need more creative engineers? Or creatives who can code? Or both? These are questions higher education professionals are only beginning to ask. It is high time we get some answers, as the ongoing AI revolution, while threatening some jobs, is certainly making room for others. I will speak from the perspective of the creative industries—but there are challenges enough for all of us.

About Thomas

Thomas Irvine is Professor and Head of Music at the University of Southampton. In addition he is Deputy Director of the Southampton Web Science Institute. In that role he is helping to coordinate the University's work in AI across research, education and public policy.

Using AI to Generate Fun and Art: AI as a Creative Partner - Vinh-Dieu Lam

Generative AI is everywhere these days and it's having a big impact on the visual content industries in particular. How we make VFX, Movies, TV and Video games are strongly affected by these new tools. Gen AI is also changing, with the focus moving from generating content seemingly from nothing to how it can be used to transform content allowing it to be used as a creative tool and as a creative partner.

About Vinh-Dieu

Vinh has been a software engineer and building virtual interactive worlds for over 20 years. Currently at Odyssey building generative AI which can create interactive visual experiences, he has worked on video games with Ubisoft and Creative Assembly and built the simulation team at Wayve, the UK's own self-driving car startup. Vinh has an academic background in Robotics, AI, Human-Computer Interaction and Computational Astrophysics though it's been a very long time since he was at university.

There will be the chance for networking before and after Thomas & Vinh's talks. With insights from the creative industries and beyond, this event will unpack the opportunities, challenges, and future potential of working with AI as a true collaborator.
