Event Details

This UK Parliament Week, the UK Parliament Education and Engagement Service are hosting a series of Jubilee Room talks, FREE for anyone who wants to find out more about how the UK Parliament works, and how to get involved.

Hansard is the record of what MPs say in Parliament.  People who work for Hansard have been researching the history of Hansardand the way that people use it. In this talk,  Hansard editors Portia Dadley and Ian Oakhill will make comparisons and contrasts between Hansard in the second world war and Hansard today.

Portia will look at the challenge of producing Hansard during the Blitz, and share some exciting material, including a shorthand notebook recording the declaration of war on 3 September 1939.

Ian will bring the story up to date by showing how Hansard has become increasingly accessible, with an ever-increasing readership. During the second world war, sales trebled, with 8,300 copies printed daily by October 1944. Hansard was made available online in 1997 when Parliament launched its website, www.parliament.uk, and now has an average readership of 35,000 page views per day. Ian will use data analytics to look at how people use Hansard and engage with Parliament, with reference to the online archive and e-petition debates.

There are limited places at this event and places are available on a first come first served basis. If a waiting list is formed then this will be distributed on a first come, first served basis, places are non-transferable.
