Event description

Description

(For Loughborough University students only)

A unique and exciting workshop which aims to challenge the often limited ideas about Batik as an art-form, using resist, discharge and dyeing techniques on silk and cotton, aimed at freeing up ideas and promoting spontaneity.

Learners will create several sampler pieces using traditional wax resists using traditional Indonesian tjaps (a craftsman-made printing block made from copper,) and Ukrainian kistkas (fine, stylus type ‘pens’) and successive dye colour layers.

The emphasis will be upon experimentation using traditional approaches with a contemporary twist.

‘Exciting,’ ‘Inspirational,’ ‘Educational’ and ‘Enjoyable’ are some of the ways past learners have evaluated their experiences, and this workshop aims to bring these qualities to life in a relaxed and creative atmosphere.

This workshop is suitable for beginners as well as learners who wish to acquire and further develop new skills and knowledge.

All equipment and materials are provided by the artist, as well as examples.

Students should wear old or protective clothing when working with dyes.

The tutor

Andrew Wynne likes to work by freely experimenting, whatever the medium, whether Batik and other variations of resist and discharge dyed textiles or print and mosaic.

Inspiration comes from a variety of sources and whilst some works are conventional depictions of the natural world, others are arrived at using a more intuitive and spontaneous approach, responding to memories, dreams, lyrics, and conversations.

He is an active member of the Harborough Artist Cluster and works are created for exhibition and commission. Works include a textile hanging for the National Trust at Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire as part of the Sheffield Childrens' Festival, a commissioned Christmas card design for English Nature and winner of Leicestershire County Councils' 'Capture a Moment in Time' Millennium competition. Works are in private commissions worldwide including Saudi Arabia, Poland, Taiwan, Philippines, UK and USA.

Current practice involves working in primary schools delivering workshops in mosaic, African textiles, silk painting with a cultural focus, and various craft forms which takes him all over the country.

Andrew also offers workshops to adults at the Attenborough Art Centre in Leicester, Lamport Hall masterclasses in Northamptonshire, and gives workshops, talks and demonstrations to a number of guilds and community groups.
