One in every five death is deemed ‘avoidable’ in England and Wales. Despite the immense economic, psychological, legal, ethical and societal impact, there is no national system to learn from and prevent these avoidable deaths.
The Preventable Deaths Tracker was created in 2020 to fill this gap by establishing reproducible methods and tools for better using medico-legal information to save lives.
After 7 years at the University of Oxford, Dr Richards received a King’s Prize Fellowship and moved to King’s College London in June 2024. In this seminar, Dr Richards will share insights on creating this tool, research during her Fellowship, and the potential for applying AI.

Meet the speaker
Dr Georgia Richards is an Epidemiologist, Health Research Scientist, and King's Prize Research Fellow at King's College London. She founded and leads the Preventable Deaths Tracker, a national vigilance platform that collates and analyses coroners' reports to learn lessons following inquests. She has a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oxford and a BSc in Biomedical Sciences with First Class Honours in Pharmacology from the University of Queensland, Australia.
