About this event

Join me, local artist Chiara Mensa, for a 3-hour evening session of linocut printmaking inspired by autumnal forms!

No previous experience is required, making this a great opportunity to try linocut for the first time or dust off your carving tools after a long break in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. The group size will be kept small, with a maximum of 8-10 participants to allow you to interact directly with me and get the most out of the workshop experience.

All materials and tools will be provided, along with an apron to protect your clothes. All you need to do is bring yourself, your creativity and the willingness to get your fingers inky!

The Theme

The workshop's theme is there to inspire you, spark your creativity and help prevent creative block at the start of the event, but it is not at all prescriptive! but it is not mandatory! You are encouraged to choose any subject for your linoprint—just ensure that your design fits within an A6 border, which is 10.5 cm x 14.8 cm

While thematic props and reference books are usually available during the event, feel free to bring any personal sketches or reference images you would like to use, as long as you have the rights to use them.

🙏🏼 Before booking, please take a moment to read the Terms and Conditions at the bottom of this page.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

---

This hands-on creative workshop is perfect for beginners who want to get a taster for linocut printmaking. During our three hours together, you will sketch, carve and print your very own linocut print inspired by autumn, fall and all-things-harvest, ready to be framed or gifted.

At the end of the event, you can take your lino block home to continue practising and printing.

What you'll learn and do

— Mark-making, linocutting and hand printing 101;

— Sketch your design on paper and transfer it onto lino;

— Carve the lino block using different-sized tools;

— Ink up your block with quality oil-based inks;

— Handprint your block on acid-free paper for long-lasting results;

What you'll get

— Access to professional-quality premium materials;

— A copy (or two!) of your very own original lino print;

— Your carved lino block, which can be reused to create more prints;

— A chance to ask me any questions you might have about the process or materials and get bespoke advice on your piece;

— A carrier bag and cardboard sleeve to safely take your prints home with you;

Sizing & Materials

— A6 linoleum block(10.5cm x 14.8cm) to carve your design.

— A5-sized paper (14.8cm x 21cm) to print on using a single ink colour.

These sizes will allow you to finish your piece, make one or two copies of your design, and still have time to pack up at the end of the event.

Frequently asked questions

Is there parking available?

This venue does not have private parking, however there is on-street parking available on side streets nearby.

Can I bring children?

While some of our workshops can be tailored to younger artists, linocut involves cutting into blocks with very sharp tools, so we don't recommend children join this one. 14-17-year-olds can join accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who will be responsible for them.

Can I bring my dog?

I love dogs! However, this ultimately depends on the venue so please do contact me to check.

Is the event BYO?

It depends on the venue. If not specified in the "Key info" section of the event description, please do contact me to check.

I have my own tools already, can I bring them?

All materials and tools will be provided, but feel free to bring along any of your own that you’d like to use.

Will an apron be provided or should I bring my own?

A protective apron is available to use during the workshop, however you are also welcome to bring your own.

Organized by

Chiara Mensa is a Bristol-based self-taught printmaker and emerging artist who has been active since early 2022. Her work is unified by her love for the natural world and interest in the detailed observation of her surroundings, from animals and plants to inanimate objects and patterns. Chiara’s main focus is the creation of original art prints from carved lino blocks that she handprints from her home studio using a tabletop press or humble wooden spoon. She truly enjoys the slow making that comes with hand printing linocut blocks, producing small batches of limited edition prints which make for a great way to start collecting original art.
