HASP-FP - Relational Harm Webinar
Overview
Join Dr. Jenny Mackay (strand leader for the Relational Harm theme of the research group) for an overview of work in this area. She will be joined by Dr. Erica Bowen, who will discuss her latest work exploring the relationship between domestic abuse and deaths under supervision, and Monica Carvalheiro, who will discuss her PhD research about ‘Understanding PTSD induced by committing a serious violent offence’.
Main talk: The relationship between history of domestic abuse and specific causes of death among adults under supervision.
Domestic abuse is variously associated with all-cause mortality, homicide, and suicide among victims. Emerging community-based evidence highlights associations between domestic abuse perpetration and deaths by suicide. Although criminal justice supervision is associated with increased early mortality, to date no study has examined whether a history of domestic abuse in the lives of people under probation supervision increases the risk of mortality in general, and specific causes of death. This talk will provide an overview of one such retrospective cohort study and the implications of key findings that history of DA predicts certain specific causes of death even when other criminogenic and social factors are controlled for.
