Hate Crime: “As regular as rain”
Event Information
About this Event
Publication of the unique findings of a study of the experiences of hate-crime and impact on mental health of Gypsies, Travellers, Roma, Showmen and Boaters. Funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
The study had the following objectives:
To undertake a scoping exercise to identify incidences (and repeat incidents) of hate crimes across the UK experienced by GTR communities.
To explore if (in the subjective opinion of respondents) there is an association between hate crime, poor mental health and incidents of suicide and para-suicide amongst Gypsy, Traveller Roma and Showman, community members.
To identify early experiences of hate crime (bullying and discrimination) in educational environments considering the impact on the mental health of children and young people subject to racist bullying.
The report was commissioned by GATEHerts and written by Professor Margaret Greenfields, Professor of Social Policy & Community Engagement, Buckinghamshire New University and
