Founded in Philosophy, Informed by Anatomy
The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Centre offer IN-CENTRE yoga classes in collaboration with Sophie O'Brien. Join us on Monday evenings at 6:00PM. There are a variety of payment options to suit every budget.
Yoga is a complex and multifaceted entity, one which often gets reduced to workouts and sun salutations when viewed through a Western lens. In our classes, the goal is to use Asana the way it was designed to be used by Patanjali – the father of Yoga - as a small part of something much larger, a stepping stone to understanding ourselves.
Hatha is one of the more accessible styles of yoga. Work with the breath, still your mind and encourage better energy flow throughout your body.
Sophie has over two years experience as a yoga teacher and has run successful classes in various studios. She has a grounded approach to yoga that incorporates anatomy theory and yogic philosophy. Working with Sophie, you'll learn to recognise and appreciate your body as a vessel for your life force - your breath. You'll develop your ability to sit still for longer periods of time and thus strengthen your mind body spirit connection.
All ages and levels of yoga experience are welcome. Please wear comfortable clothing that you can move in and bring a yoga mat if you have one. We will have yoga mats available that will be thoroughly sanitised between uses.
Please make sure that you book in advance if possible as places are limited.
What to Expect
Hatha flow class usually begins with a warm up, followed by some sun salutations and a new flow each week, based on a theme. Each class is an hour in length, excluding savasana (the meditative portion which usually lasts 10ish minutes) at the end of the class.
Please come dressed in something you can move around in comfortably. Please also bring water and your own yoga mat if you have one.
About Sophie O'Brien
Founded in Philosophy, Informed by Anatomy: my teaching style stays true to elements of the traditional practice and incorporates physiological knowledge while aiming to create an environment where everybody feels safe, supported, and welcome. My classes use modern and diverse poses, but employ them in the way Asana was designed to be used by Patanjali - as a small part of something much larger; a stepping stone to understanding ourselves.
In 2019 I completed my 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training in Goa, India. Since then, I have taught for over 200 hours, and accrued around 50 hours of additional, certified training across a variety of topics; the most important - to me - being body positive/inclusive Yoga, Yoga therapy, and trauma-informed practice.
Learning Yoga in its birthplace in India gifted me knowledge of the authentic practice; the spiritual in harmony with the physical. This marriage of the philosophical side of Yoga with anatomy and therapeutic modalities is where the magic happens. My aim is to show my students - no matter their ability, size, or background - their divine power and potential. Because I believe this magic is in all of us.
