HATstock Talk - Rupert Battersby presents 'Battersby Hats of Stockport'
Sat 25 March 2017, 13:30 – 14:00 GMT
About the Speaker
Rupert is the son of the last Managing Director of Battersby Hats, and thus a great grandson of the founder of the firm, William John Battersby (1839-1915). He is the author of Battersby Hats of Stockport, published in November 2016.
About the Book
The book 'Battersby Hats of Stockport' chronicles the 101 year history of the local firm, from its very tentative and insecure start, through its expansion to become one of the foremost manufacturers of headwear in the world until it suffered the decline which overtook the entire hat industry of Britain. It uses photographs and documents predominantly from private collections, most of which have never been available for public view. The book also follows the family behind the business, with its triumphs and tragedies intertwined with the ebb and flow of the industry.
About the Talk
Rupert will give some background to his book, and the discovery of a huge archive of photographs which were used as a basis for the publication, many of which lay unseen for over a century. He will also use these pictures to provide a look at life in the heyday of the hat business, giving a window into world of the family behind the factory.
Battersby Hats of Stockport will be on sale and Rupert will be on hand to sign your copy as part of HATstock.
All HATstock talks are FREE. Attendees are welcome to make a donation to Brain Tumour Research on the day.
