About this event
‘Have a Word’
IBA, Alcohol and other drugs, Identification & Brief Advice Training
“Have a Word’ is a brief conversation at a teachable moment to ensure you Make Every Contact Count. It is literally finding the time to “Have a Word” with someone about their alcohol/ drug intake. The course offers a structure for non-specialists to be able to feel comfortable about raising the subject of alcohol and other drugs, measuring risk and offering information and brief advice or signposting where necessary for additional help.
Who could benefit from the training?
Do you work with individuals in the Middlesbrough area who may be drinking alcohol or other drugs at levels which may be described as hazardous or harmful to themselves and others? This training will enable you to support those people you are working with by equipping you with up-to-date advice and information.
The training is free and suitable for any non-specialist worker within the Middlesbrough area who may come across alcohol or drug use disorder within their day to day working life, particularly those involved in health, social care or education.
Aim of the training:
To increase early identification of problematic alcohol or drug use and equip staff to deliver Brief interventions to prompt the person to recognise the harm or potential harm which their drinking or drug use may cause. To capitalise on a teachable moment, and to reduce the harm from alcohol and other drugs for individuals, families and communities in Middlesbrough
Learning Outcomes:
• Identify the number of units in alcoholic drinks
• Outline the harm caused by alcohol and other drugs
• Use a tool, AUDIT and DUDIT to assess alcohol or drug consumption
• Deliver Brief Advice aimed at reducing the level of consumption
• Know how to refer to ACT Recovery Solutions
A new integrated model launched on 1 April 2021, and brings together support for Middlesbrough residents who may have experienced or are experiencing:
domestic abuse
homelessness
substance misuse
The integrated model consists of a number of specialist support services which have been commissioned by Middlesbrough Council. The Middlesbrough integrated model will mean better information sharing, easier access to the right support, and services working together more effectively. In short, the support a person receives will be 'joined up'. It recognises that people have different needs, so will offer different levels of support based on individual circumstances.
We've considered good practice from other areas to help us design this new model especially for Middlesbrough. We're also responding to learning from recent Lessons Learned Reviews and Domestic Homicide Reviews, and putting recommendations into practice. Given the increase in drug-related deaths, domestic homicides, and high harm and vulnerability experienced by some of our residents, everyone involved in the integrated model is committed to this new way of working, which will help make a difference for residents who need it most.
