About this event

  • 2 hours

Emma and Karin met online in 2023 and discovered they had much in common, including a passion for supervising and resourcing other supervisors. Both have devised their own models of supervision. Here they come together to create a space to explore what supervision can and does explore.

In this workshop, the presenters will be discussing their knowledge of what supervision entails. Emma will be seeing through an IFS lens, (see Emma’s workshop earlier in the week on Tuesday 25 June 3 to 5pm BST) and Karin will be focusing on what she believes are the things you should be getting or providing in supervision (see her recordings for last year and this year’s two workshops).

Both Karin and Emma have presented workshops and talks on these topics separately, and due to their success, they’re joining forces to bring you a confidential space to discuss, and as such the sessions won’t be recorded.

Now to the workshop content itself:

Supervision is one of the most important aspects of our private practice as counsellors or psychotherapists. It is for this reason that I’ve taken the time to cover all the bases of what we need to offer our supervisees, and what we should be getting as supervisees ourselves.

In this workshop, we’d like to explore in a more practical sense, the 5 theories that Karin believes cover most if not all the areas and intricacies of supervision. The model Karin developed from these theories has served her well through her years as a supervisor, and she hope it will do the same for you.

In addition, Emma will bring her expertise from supervising IFS professionals since 2017, editing a multi-author book on IFS supervision/consultation and informed by the model The 8 Facets of IFS Supervision.

As always, the main goal of supervision is to keep us working to a high ethical standard, as well as keeping us safe as supervisors, which in turn keeps our supervisees safe, and in turn keeps their clients safe. In order to do so, we might ask ourselves these questions:

  • What happens once the client leaves the room?
  • How does the client impact you through your work, and what to do with it?
  • Why do I need to cover all the bases in supervision, and what are these?
  • Who is responsible for knowing and applying these bases of supervision?
  • How do I feel towards my supervisee?
  • How do you feel towards your client?
  • Who inside might need some attention here in supervision or in personal therapy?
  • Whereabouts in the IFS model are you with this client?

Each of the theories we’ll look at, focuses on different aspects of the supervisory process and how they complement each other. They are all key to different issues that need to be taken care of if we are to have safe and ethical supervision.

Through practical exercises and reflection, we will be covering:

  • The different relationships that occur within the work (client-therapist-supervisor-profession) and how each is affected by the other; or in IFS terms, the many systems at play
  • The training stages of development of the supervisee (from trainee to experienced) and awareness of what the supervisee might need from us at different stages
  • Teasing out the functions of supervision – restorative (self-care, support, growth), normative (“quality control”, keeping the therapist ethical), and educational (skills development) and teasing out how IFS supervision might have similar/different demands, expectations and elements
  • Practical aspects such as contracting, agenda setting, reviewing, repairing issues, creating a safe space for the supervisee
  • The different aspects (at least 15!) that can be discussed in supervision, other than client work
  • Who is responsible for what in the different relationships (client-therapist-supervisor-profession)
