Have yourself a Merry Little Winterval/Christmas/Festive Season/delete as appropriate
For our annual Christmas lecture, Dr David Webster, Acting Head of Humanities, will be presenting his lecture: 'To save us all from Satan's power when we were gone astray: Christmas as commercial apocalypse, cultural parable and existential adventure story.'
He will be shedding light on how people of different faiths and none embrace customs and traditions from other cultures and religions, including Christmas.
He threads together non-Christian Christmas traditions, theological re-readings and Winterval culture-wars. Dr David Webster will spin a tale of dread, overcooked sprouts, fearsome relatives, complaining as sport, shopping and the threat of eternal damnation, before wishing us all a very confused, British, and largely merry Christmas.
Dr Webster published How Contemporary Spirituality Makes Us Stupid, Selfish and Unhappy in 2012. In additional to scholarly works on Buddhism and desire, the nature of belief and other topics in Buddhist studies and philosophy and religion, he has also written about blues and death in religions. He is passionate e-learning and uses podcast, guest speakers via Skype and podcasts to enhance his teaching.
