Event Details

COVID-19 STATEMENT: To coincide with Government guidelines on preventing the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), the Haweswater Badger Hide will be closed until at least the end of April. We will continue to follow Governmental advice regarding reopening the hide at a later date. Please contact RSPB Haweswater Visitor Development Officer Heather at heather.devey@rspb.org.uk if you have enquiries about this.

---

From the comfort of our Badger Hide at Naddle Farm, you can enjoy watching and photographing the 'Haweswater Badgers' as they forage and socialise, allowing you the unique opportunity to observe these secretive mammals in the Lake District National Park at close range.

Exclusive hide hire is an excellent experience for wildlife photographers and small educational groups, but also for families and couples keen to have a real, wild night out! You will have the hide entirely to yourself, however for an extra cost you can book a knowledgeable and friendly RSPB Badger Guide to share their expertise for part of your evening.

Seating is provided, as is the facility to make hot drinks to enjoy, including Clipper hot chocolate, tea and coffee. The hide is entirely enclosed, and a radiator is available for use during winter evenings, and with the hide less than a 10 second walk from the car park this all makes for a very comfortable, warm badger watching experience during chilly autumn and winter nights!

You will be greeted upon arrival by a member of the Haweswater team and taken to the Badger Hide, where you will be introduced to the facilities available and given a brief introduction to the Haweswater Badgers. You will then have the freedom to leave the hide whenever you like that evening.

PLEASE NOTE that the times stated are not indicative of badger activity. Within the week of your selected date, you will be contacted by a member of the RSPB Haweswater team to tell you when the most appropriate arrival time would be according to recent badger activity.

Our Guided Badger Watches will return in April 2020.

FAQs

Is the Badger Hide suitable for wildlife photography?

Yes. The hide has been built to be ground level, offering you the greatest opportunity to photograph Badgers at this level. The windows are maintained daily affording you a clear view out, enabling you to watch and photograph Badgers this way without obscurement.

There is also camera latch which you can open prior to Badgers arriving if you would prefer.

If capturing continuous photographs of Badgers is your primary intention for using the hide, we would recommend that no more than three photographers use the hide at a time.

Do I have to be a wildlife photographer or educational group to book exclusive use of the Hide?

No you do not, anyone is welcome to book the hide exclusively, however we recommend that groups no larger than 6 attend. Please contact us via the details below if you have any queries about this.

Can I book the Hide on a date not listed?

If you have a particular date in mind to book the Hide exclusively which is not listed on the booking system, please get in touch with us directly to discover whether this can be arranged. We would make every effort to make this available to you if possible.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Unfortunately public transport to Naddle Farm is unavailable.

There is parking available at Naddle Farm for those driving. Simply drive up the Naddle Farm lane until you reach the farmhouse (the RSPB Haweswater offices), where a member of the Haweswater team will be waiting for you.

Are toilets available on site?

There is a toilet which you are welcome to use before and after entering the hide. This is external to the hide.

How can I contact the RSPB Haweswater with any questions?

Please contact Visitor Development Officer Heather Devey at the RSPB Haweswater office on 01931 713376 or at heather.devey@rspb.org.uk if you have any queries.

RSPB Haweswater

Nestled in the folds of Haweswater’s dramatic landscape lie pockets of wildness; alpine plants cling to cliffs and ledges, whilst woodland birds, red squirrels and badgers teem in the woodlands. The quiet, rugged charm of Haweswater sets it apart from many of the more popular Lake District honeypots, offering opportunities for seclusion and wildlife encounters unlike any other in the National Park.

This brand new collection of RSPB guided events have been designed to offer a facinating insight into the diversity of wildlife in this beautiful corner of the National Park. Discover more about the work of the RSPB and United Utilities at Haweswater by visiting the link provided.
