Event Details

Enjoy a wild night out at RSPB Haweswater!

From the comfort of our Badger Hide you can watch the renowned Haweswater Badgers' as they forage and socialise, allowing you the unique opportunity to observe these secretive mammals at close range.

Our popular Guided Badger Watches are held every Monday and Wednesday evening through late spring and summer, with an experienced Badger Hide Guide on hand to tell you fascinating facts about our lovely brocks.

Each Guided Badger Watch lasts approximately 1.5 hours. Seating is provided, and you can enjoy a complimentary hot drink to accompany your badger watch. The hide is fully enclosed and is less than a 10 second walk from the car park.

Spaces are restricted to 6 people during each Badger Watch, so please book early to avoid disappointment!

If you are a keen wildlife photographer, or would like to hire the full hide exclusively, take a look at our Exclusive Hide Hire. This option allows the use of the camera latches and tripods, which are not permitted during Guided Badger Watches.

PRICES

Under 18's £10 (Ages 8 and above only. Please see FAQ's below for more information)

FAQs

Are families welcome in the Haweswater Badger Hide?

Absolutely! We would encourage families to join us at Haweswater to enjoy a Badger Watch together, and would equally recommend that adults who are intrigued by these fascinating mammals visit the Hide for this unique experience.

We would however recommend that only children aged 8 and above attend Badger Watches. As badgers are sensitive to noise, children (and adults!) would need to remain largely quiet for the 1.5 hour session.

We would very much like to welcome younger Badger enthusiasts, so please contact us for enquiries about visiting with younger children.

Can I bring my dog?

As badgers are highly sensitve to smell, dogs are not allowed in the Badger Hide - even the most well behaved pups!

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Unfortunately public transport to Naddle Farm is unavailable.

There is parking available at Naddle Farm for those driving. Simply drive up the Naddle Farm lane until you reach the farmhouse (the RSPB Haweswater offices), where your Badger Guide will be waiting for you.

Are toilets available on site?

There is a toilet which you are welcome to use before and after entering the hide.

What can I bring into the event?

Although the badgers will be within close range, we would recommend you bring binoculars to see close detail of the individual markings which help us identify the Haweswater Badgers.

You are also welcome to bring and use a camera, whether this is a camera on your phone or a digital camera, however as these sessions are intended primarily for badger 'watching' we would recommend that wildlife photographers consider our Private Hide Rental option instead of the Individual Bookings option.

We would also recommend that if you would like to take photos, you use a silent shutter if possible. Flash photography is prohibited as this causes disturbance to the badgers.

You may wish to bring a notepad and pen if you are interested in taking notes on badger ecology and your observations whilst in the hide.

Bring a warm layer and wear comfortable clothing. You can enjoy the warmth of a heater in the hide during colder months, however we would prefer not to use this throughout summer.

Please refrain from bringing food into the hide. You are welcome to bring your own (non alcoholic) drinks, however hot drinks (Clipper tea, coffee and hot chocolate) will be available.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Please contact Visitor Development Officer Heather Devey at the RSPB Haweswater office on 01931 713376 if you have any queries.

RSPB Haweswater

Nestled in the folds of Haweswater’s dramatic landscape lie pockets of wildness; alpine plants cling to cliffs and ledges, whilst woodland birds, red squirrels and badgers teem in the woodlands. The quiet, rugged charm of Haweswater sets it apart from many of the more popular Lake District honeypots, offering opportunities for seclusion and wildlife encounters unlike any other in the National Park.

This brand new collection of RSPB guided events have been designed to offer a facinating insight into the diversity of wildlife in this beautiful corner of the National Park. Discover more about the work of the RSPB and United Utilities at Haweswater by visiting the link provided.
