Event Details

An immersive tour of Fleet Street, tracing the birth of the British mass media to one of London's most historic - and depraved - thoroughfares.

A pungent brew of stories, songs, scents, and drama, the tour is led by media historian Dr Matthew Green and begins at the site of London's first printing shop in Stationer's Hall Court by St Paul's Cathedral.

From there, we take in the sites of Roman graveyards, underground rivers, newspaper offices, famous taverns, debauched alleyways, the house where journalist Dr Johnson and his cat lived, and Button's coffeehouse revealing how a cluster of newspaper printing offices generated a wily, partisan brand of journalism, shaped by its degenerate birthplace.

Including a pop-up stocks in which slanderous journalists will be clamped - and squishy tomatoes to throw at them. And specially-reproduced antique newspapers.

The tour lasts approximately 1hr 30 minutes, beginning by the plaque marking the shop of Wynkyn de Worde in Stationer's Hall Court, off Ave Maria Lane and finishing in Bow Street, Covent Garden.
