Description

HAYDN: NELSON MASS

Gavin Roberts, conductor

The St Marylebone Ensemble

The St Marylebone ‘Come and Sing’ Chorus

Helen Semple, soprano

Caroline Daggett, mezzo-soprano

Nicholas Berry, tenor

Andrew Copeman, bass

Hear the culmination of the day’s work from the ‘Come and Sing’ Chorus and the St Marylebone ensemble in a rousing performance of Joseph Haydn’s monumental Nelson Mass, chosen to celebrate the historical connection between Nelson and St Marylebone; Horatia Nelson being baptised at the church in 1803. Written in 1798, the official name for Haydn’s masterpiece is Missa in Angustiis (Mass in troubled times), but the more popular title stuck following a performance in 1800 at the Esterhazy Palace, attended by Lord Nelson himself. The concert will also feature Haydn's 'Lines from the battle of the Nile', composed to be sung by Nelson’s mistress, Lady Emma Hamilton, (and mother of Horatia) which celebrates Nelson's victory over Napoleon off the coast of Egypt!

There will be a pre-concert talk on Nelson’s connections with the church at 6:30pm

A WINE RECEPTION will follow the concert
