Event description

Description

“Weep Mothers, weep o’er the loss of your dear ones

The Fathers and Children who are strewn amongst the dead,

The Explosion has fill’d the whole district with sadness

For homes that are lonely, and hearts that have bled.” (Anon, 1878)

On the 7th June 1878 a huge explosion ripped through the Wood Pit Colliery in Haydock.

The disaster cost the lives of 204 men and boys and left 93 widows and 282 orphans.

In the wake of the tragedy the grieving community showed great spirit under very difficult circumstances to came together to support one another and a fund was set up by Lord Derby which raised about £25,000 (about two million pounds in today’s money).

Join Haydock Male Voice Choir and St.Helens Libraries in the build up to the 140th anniversary of the disaster as we pay tribute to the men and boys who went off to work one morning and never came home.
