Event description
Understanding the human element of pet and equine obesity and how to change owner behaviour to address it

About this Event

This workshop invites practitioners working at the front line in companion animal and equine obesity (including vets, vet nurses, nutritionists, physiotherapists, behaviourists, welfare officers, trainers, farriers/trimmers and more) to attend a practical workshop exploring human behaviour change approaches to managing obesity primarily in dogs, cats and horses. In this workshop participants will learn about HBC approaches to managing obesity at individual, local and national levels, and will compare and contrast different aspects in relation to management of the different species.

Following this workshop, the group will form a working group/community of practitioners that will continue to reflect on and share experiences of the approaches used.

The outputs of this event will be used in the planning for a much larger gathering in spring 2021 that will bring together a wider range of stakeholders, including academic and commercial organisations. At the 2021 event, talks will be invited from the frontline community of practice, as well as from nationally renowned vets, researchers and so on.

The June 2020 workshop will be interactive and informative covering the following topics:

1. Background – overview of human behaviour change and why it’s important

2. Psychology of companion animal ownership and obesity

3. Obesogenic environments

4. Thinking about how you can make changes at each level

Outputs of workshop:

  • Participants will better understand some of the drivers maintaining the prevalence of obesity in companion animals and equines.
  • Participants will have clear ideas of how to make changes through their work at individual, local and societal levels.
  • Participants will potentially start working as a community group to share ideas and experience, and plan targeted training and events moving forward.

Tickets are £65 early bird (for bookings before April 15th) and £85 April 16th onwards. Places will be prioritised to people working directly with clients.
