The Republic of Azerbaijan is the largest country in the Caucasus region. At the crossroads between Asia and Europe, it borders with Russia to the north, the Caspian Sea to the East, Iran to the south, Armenia to the west and Georgia to the north-west.
Azerbaijan has one of the fastest growing economies due to large and growing oil and gas exports. For many years, investments in the energy sector have been a crucial priority for Western companies and governments in order to secure the supply of Caspian energy resources to European markets.
However, the Azerbaijani government is keen to promote foreign investment in agriculture, ICT, tourism and the education sector. Non-energy sectors, including construction, banking, and real estate, recently featured double-digit growth. Thus, the opening up of various sectors of the economy could potentially provide plenty of business opportunities in the nearby future.
