Thailand is a constitutional monarchy located at the centre of the Indochina peninsula in Southeast Asia, one of the northernmost members of the Association of South East Asian Nations and second largest member state in terms of nominal GDP.
Considered a newly industrialised, export-driven economy, Thailand has recovered from the currency collapse which prompted the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997, following a decade of the world's highest growth rate from 1985 to 1996 (avg. 12.4% p.a). The millennium saw strong, export-led growth up until the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, when demand for Thai textiles, cars, computers, tourism and agricultural products slowed, exacerbated by political instability.
Thailand’s economy is now predicted to rebound with 7.5% GDP growth in 2013, thanks to the accommodative monetary policy of the Bank of Thailand and a package of fiscal stimulus measures by the incumbent Yingluck Shinawatra government. This coincides with serious social and political developments, including a nascent middle class, high consumer spending, territorial disputes in the South China Sea, ongoing partisan tensions in domestic politics, and leadership changes in North East Asia.
This public policy briefing will examine such challenges and explore the ways in which greater co-operation between Thailand and the UK can facilitate their resolution.
His Excellency Mr Teparak was appointed Ambassador of Thailand to the UK and Northern Ireland in October 2012, following a successful career at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs and postings in the United Arab Emirates and Australia.
He is also a member of the Board of Directors and Audit Committee of the Electricity Generating Public Company, the first independent power producing company in Thailand, and has held senior positions at the Government Savings Bank and Krungthai Bank Public Company. Mr Teparak was decorated Knight Grand Cordon (Special Class) of the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand in 2011 for services to his country.
Simon Landy is Chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce Thailand. He has resided in Thailand since 1981 and achieved great success with Colliers Thailand, an international property consultancy and brokerage, of which he is Executive Chairman and co-founder. He represented BCCT during Thai PM Yingluck Shinawatra’s delegation’s visit to the UK.
Simon also serves as member of the UK-based International Valuation Standards Board and on the Thai SEC sub-committee on property fund regulation.
