Description

Healing the Traumatized Self: Clinical insights from interpersonal neurobiology

Margaret Wilkinson, analyst and author

Saturday 20 May 2017 10:00 – 16:00

Drake House, 44 St Georges Road, London SW19 4ED

Workshop cost: £120/ 10% discount for Wimbledon Guild counsellors/ Early-bird discount of 15% available until 4 Feb 2017

The Workshop:

We very much need a theory and practice where the best of the old is conserved and yet where new insights are integrated and used effectively. I put forward the value of an interdisciplinary whole person psychodynamic approach that takes on board insights from attachment research, parent-infant psychotherapy research, trauma research and the neurobiology of emotion. I suggest that such an approach should no longer be considered an optional “extra” in the practice of psychotherapy and counselling. Rather it should become the foundation of our training and practice. How links are made between these and other contemporary fields of study regarding the making of mind, the insights that emerge and their strengths and limitations reward careful research, rather than speculation.

Cutting-edge research and clinical material will be explored in relation to the practical, clinical challenges of addressing and overcoming early relational trauma. Clinical material, including images, will be presented and there will be opportunities for discussion.

The Trainer:

Margaret Wilkinson is a training analyst in the Society of Analytical Psychology, London, a member of the
British Psychoanalytic Council, and of the editorial board of the Journal of Analytical Psychology. She leads neuroscience research reading and clinical seminars for The Northern School of Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy in Leeds, Cambridge and Edinburgh, and for The Institute of Mental Health at the University of Nottingham. She is the author of numerous papers and two books: ‘Coming into mind. The mind-brain relationship: a Jungian clinical perspective’ (2006, Routledge), and ‘Changing Minds in Therapy’ (2010, Norton Interpersonal Neurobiology series). She is in private practice in North Derbyshire, England.
